Car Crash
26th September, Netcare 911 Basic Life Support personnel Abel Sethole and Life Mathebula came across a motor vehicle accident in Limpopo. They saw the unconscious driver under the car, which had caught alight. It quickly became apparent that something had to be done, or else they were going to watch a man burn to death.

Ms Faruki, the Operational Manager for Netcare 911 Eastern Limpopo Region and Advanced Life Support paramedic, stopped to assist along with Abel and Life. Ms Faruki warned the two gentlemen “Hazards First” – a term meaning that before an emergency services member can assist in saving someone else’s life, they have to ensure that the situation is safe enough for them to do so.

Without hesitation, Abel and Life ran towards the burning wreck, shielding their faces from the intense heat with their flight suits. Once they were close enough, they managed to get a hold of the man. They then pulled him from the blaze by his arms, started treatment to his injuries and stabilized him for transfer to the hospital. Seconds later, the car was covered in four-meter high flames. After the ordeal, Abel and Life carried on with the rest of their duties as if it was all in a day’s work.

For going beyond the call of duty, Abel Sethole and Life Mathebula are deserving nominees in the Centrum Guardian Project.
